The dust and debris of a city are the overflows of its own activity. The curb of the streets hosts an accumulation of matter that represents a city´s rhythms, actions and changes over time. A passing truck´s waste, a smashed bottle, an overflowed drain…
These vases have been shaped around the curbs of South Bermondsey, the industrial area surrounding Maria’s studio. A smooth stoneware clay cylinder has been attached to a paint roller and then rolled around the streets to collect that accumulation of matter. After, they were fired with transparent glaze at 1260 degrees.
The collected detritus has informed new solid material by embedding itself in the pieces: leaving indentations in the clay and decorating its surfaces. It is a way of seeing the geology of the city and thus, visualising its rhythms. Each material will react differently in the firing process; metals will expand, stones may break, glass will melt, and organic matter will disappear completely leaving only its silhouette.
